Astigmatism

Astigmatism: Understanding This Common Vision Condition
Astigmatism is a common refractive error that can cause vision to appear blurry at both near and far distances. It can affect everyday activities such as reading, using your phone, driving, watching TV or working on a computer.
How does astigmatism affect vision?
The cornea is not always perfectly round or evenly curved. When its curvature is uneven, it can cause light to focus at different points instead of one clear point on the retina.
This is known as astigmatism, and it can result in blurred vision.
What are the common symptoms?
You may notice:
· Blurry vision at near or distance
· Eye strain or tired eyes
· Headaches
· Squinting
· Confusing similar-looking numbers or letters, such as 8 and 6
Some people may have mild astigmatism and experience few or no noticeable symptoms.
How do glasses help?
Astigmatism is commonly corrected with prescription glasses or contact lenses.
Astigmatism correction uses cylinder power and axis to compensate for the uneven curvature of the eye. This helps light focus more accurately on the retina, giving you clearer and more comfortable vision.
Wearing your prescribed glasses does not make your astigmatism worse or cause your prescription to increase. Glasses are simply an optical aid that helps correct the way light enters your eyes.
