Tropia (Strabismus): Understanding Eye Misalignment

Tropia, also known as strabismus, crossed eyes or a squint, is a condition where the eyes are consistently misaligned and point in different directions. It can be present from birth or develop later in life.

How does tropia affect vision?

For both eyes to work together comfortably, they need to be properly aligned and pointing in the same direction.

With tropia, the eyes are not properly aligned, which can affect how the brain combines the images from both eyes. This may result in double vision, reduced depth perception or eye strain.

Types of tropia

Tropia can occur in different directions:

· Esotropia: The eye turns inward

· Exotropia: The eye turns outward

· Hypertropia: The eye turns upward

· Hypotropia: The eye turns downward

· Cyclotropia: The eye rotates or tilts

The misalignment can affect one or both eyes and may vary depending on the individual.

What are the common symptoms?

You may notice:

· Double vision

· Reduced depth perception

· Eye strain or tired eyes

· Headaches

· Squinting or closing one eye to see more comfortably

How is tropia managed?

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the eye misalignment, as well as the individual's age and visual needs.

Treatment may include:

· Prescription glasses

· Prism lenses

· Vision therapy

· Eye patching for certain children when one eye is weaker

· Surgery

An eye examination can help assess how well the eyes are aligned and how they are working together, allowing the appropriate treatment to be recommended.

See clearly and comfortably

If you notice an eye turning in or out, experience double vision, headaches or difficulty with depth perception, it may be worth having your eyes assessed.

Visit us for an eye examination and speak with our team if you have concerns about your eye alignment or vision. Early assessment can be especially important for children to support healthy visual development.

Understanding your eye alignment is an important part of understanding your vision.
